FAQ

Operate a City bus or paratransit van in a safe, dependable and professional manner. Bends, flexes, pushes and pulls a wheelchair or other mobility device, in order to assist passengers. Individuals who are bilingual are encouraged to apply.

Possession of valid NE commercial driver’s license is required, or ability to obtain Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within 60 days of employment.

All driving records will be checked to meet standards through the Department of Motor Vehicles.

NOTE: Serious driving convictions will be cause for rejection if convicted within the last three (3) years. Other driving record factors will be considered on an individual basis.
• Must be able to pass Federal Department of Transportation physical standards.
• Must comply with the requirements of the established policies when working with passengers.
• Performs all actions necessary to comply with StarTran’s reporting procedures.
• Uses two-way radio to communicate with dispatcher.

THIS SAFETY SENSITIVE POSITION IS SUBJECT TO MANDATORY DRUG TESTING POLICIES AS A CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT.

Must be at least 18 years of age and meet such driving record and physical requirements as established by the City of Lincoln.

Commercial Learner’s Permit required at start date.

Training, including Entry Level Driver Training, will be provided prior to testing for a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).

HOURS: FULL TIME; MON – SAT; Hours to be scheduled.

To be eligible for insurance benefits, employees must work at least 30 hours per week.
To be eligible for the retirement plan, employees must work at least 20 hours per week.
Temporary, seasonal, and unclassified employees are not eligible for benefits.

Yes! Lincoln’s transit system offers new employees a six to eight-week long training including simulation training and a chance to earn their Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). There are a variety of tests and practice sessions new employees are required to pass before being assigned a bus route.

The City of Lincoln wants its team members and the public to remain safe throughout the pandemic. A variety of precautions are being taken to assist with protecting Lincoln’s Bus Operators every day. StarTran asks riders to enter and exit newer buses through the rear door (buses that have the word “Lincoln” on the side). If riders need to use the lift, they can still enter through the front door. Each bus is disinfected frequently.

VANLNK, StarTran’s on-demand transportation service is available for riders who need to social distance. This door-to-door service is $5 per person, per trip for regular shared-ride service. Reservations, payments and cancellations are all handled through the VANLNK app.

Paratransit trip scheduling can be completed in the VANLNK app or by calling 402-441-7109.

Once you are hired, head on down to the Department of Licensing and get a CDL learner’s permit. From there, you’ll work with an experienced Bus Operator, learn the routes, practice operating the bus, and you’ll get paid to train while you work on your CDL. We pay for you to take your CDL test and we’ll even let you use a StarTran bus to take it. When you pass, you are all set to drive. If you need to take the test a second time, we’ll help you prepare. Your success is our success.

Pay varies per position and the added benefits of insurance, paid leave, retirement and longevity make the City an excellent employer. Wages for all City of Lincoln positions can be found on the Human Resources website under Classification and Descriptions. They range from $19.45 – $25.94, hourly.

Bus Operators will receive a minimum of eight hours a day, five days a week. Hours and days can be split between shifts Monday through Saturday. Maintenance positions typically have set morning/afternoon or afternoon/evening schedules. Administrative staff generally work 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Overtime opportunities are generally available for Bus Operators. Overtime may also be available for additional staff.

Bus Operators and Maintenance staff are provided a yearly uniform allowance.
Bus Operators maintain their own uniforms. Maintenance is provided a laundry service. Administrative staff dress code is business attire.

Buses are assigned to different Bus Operators daily. Bus Operators will need to be familiar with all routes as they may be required to drive multiple routes.

Bus Operators will be trained on both vehicle types. Mechanics will work on all fleet vehicles.
